The Business Owner Who Needed 230 Clients (And What It Means For Yours)
I want to tell you about Jayne.
Jayne ran a pet sitting and dog walking business alongside a full-time job. She had 35 regular clients. She was working evenings and weekends. She was exhausted. And she desperately wanted to quit the day job and do the pets full-time.
The problem was she'd never run the numbers. She was operating on pure effort and hope.
The Calculation That Changed Everything
When we worked out Jayne's Freedom Number, a modest income to replace her salary and cover her costs, and divided it by her average client value (£35 a month, roughly £400 a year per client), the answer was brutal.
She needed 230 clients.
230 dogs. 230 sets of keys. 230 families to coordinate. Even working seven days a week, the logistics are impossible.
She'd been telling herself she just needed to hustle more. Get 10 more clients and she'd be fine. But the maths proved that 10 more clients, even 100 more clients, would never solve it. She was chasing a finish line that didn't exist.
This Is Why The Maths Is Compassionate
Knowing this number, as painful as it was, saved Jayne years of exhaustion. Because now she had a specific problem to solve instead of a vague feeling that she just needed to try harder.
She had two real options. Become a premium pet concierge, charging significantly more per client for a higher-end service. Or hire staff to handle the volume, which would require more clients but wouldn't all fall on her.
Neither option is easy. But both are real. Both are solvable. Carrying on as she was, was neither.
What About You?
There's also Stephen in this story. Stephen was setting up a cybersecurity consultancy with two partners. His numbers looked very different to Jayne's. High value clients, minimal direct costs, almost 100% gross profit margin on his time. His challenge wasn't pricing, it was volume at the right rate.
Same framework, completely different answer. Because your Freedom Number isn't a generic formula. It's specific to your business, your costs, your life.
The question to ask yourself is this. If you calculated exactly how many clients you need to live your ideal life, would that number feel manageable? Or would it tell you, like it told Jayne, that something fundamental needs to change?
Better to know now than five years down the road.
